Eventually, I ran out of fuel. Again, an impossible mission. I know what you're thinking: Hilary must be the worst videogame player ever. Well, I had former astronaut Charles Onyett attempt to beat one of these missions on Il-2 DS and his response was, "I don't believe it can be done."
It's too bad, because Il-2 has some real promise. The dogfight missions aren't bad at all, even though the numerous markers on screen become difficult to separate. What I really liked was the pre-mission briefings. In these, you're given a map on the touch screen and a set of colored pens.
As the mission is described to you, the pens are used to mark objectives and create a flight path and even assign specific altitudes to fly at as you head towards objectives. It's like building out your own mission. That map stays on the touch screen as you fly and is a great resource. Too bad the gameplay is broken.
I've exhausted my options searching for ways to actually beat the majority of Il-2's impossible missions. I've run out of patience.

This is a game that just can't be won. Not that it really matters since every mission is unlocked from the start and there's no indicator of which missions you've completed.
