Internet Marketing Basics: 5 Proven Strategies to Jump Start Your Business

Nowadays everyone wants to start a home-based business. The problem is once you start the business you are stuck asking yourself "what do I do next?" Here are a few proven strategies that will get your business or product recognized.

1. Article Marketing. If you don't have a lot of money for advertising this should be your first method of advertising your website. People love to read articles when they want to find out some information online, so this would be a good place to start. First you need to determine what your niche is and who is your target market. I am The Paid Gamer, my niche is video games and my target market is mature gamers and those who want to make extra money from home. What is my product? I have a few products depending on what my visitors want. If the visitor simply wants video game hints, tips, or strategies, I offer video game hints, tips, or strategies. If the visitor wants to learn how I make money using the internet, then I offer to show them exactly how I do so. So now that I have figured out what my products/services are and exactly who I want to sell them to, I can write articles directed towards that particular group. You can't write five articles and expect a flood of traffic to your website. If you do not have the money for google adwords and other forms of paid advertisements, you should treat article writing like a part time job. A good starting point would be 2 articles a day, taking one day off a week. This will give you 48 articles in a month. Do this for five months straight and you will have 240 articles submitted to numerous article directories. With a link back to your website in the resource box of each article, this is a sure fire way to generate free traffic for what ever your business is. Google and Yahoo also love certain article directories so if your articles are good enough you can get free search engine traffic. You have two options, the expensive option which doesn't require much of your time, or the free method which does require some time and effort. The purpose of article writing is to establish yourself as an expert on whatever topic you are writing on. If you write effective articles that provide value to your reader they will in turn trust your word on what you are promoting. So if you have a database of quality articles you are now the expert in your field and your readers can trust you. To be successful in any business online, you have to gain trust first. People are already afraid of scams or being ripped off. So what makes you think they are going to just come to your website and put in their credit card information? Do not take this tip lightly, articles are a powerful tool for driving traffic to your website. Make it one of your daily tasks to write at least two quality articles, the results won't be immediate but your efforts will not go unnoticed.

2. Give away valuable freebies. Ok so you know what you are selling, and you know who your customers are. Now you have to think about what is valuable to this target market. Think about the little food court in the mall. How does the guy always get you to want to try their restaurant. They hand out free samples! Whether it's frozen yogurt or the bourbon chicken on a toothpick. People love to get free things. Now I can't just hand out anything for free. The freebie you are handing out must have some type of value. It should help the visitor or solve some type of problem. When marketing, I am constantly thinking of what can I give away for free that will provide some type of value. In the online gaming world everyone wants to be the best for bragging rights. Everyone wants to be in the winners circle. Hint and tips that most of the gaming community does not know are huge in video games. These strategies can give you the competitive edge over your opponent. Some people have strategies and hints so good that they can't give them away for free and charge very nicely for them. A buddy of mine runs a gaming website and offers 1 hour coaching games for $20. People that want to master this particular video game visit his website and pay him to play for one hour and learn from him. For example, I could have my website say something like, "free insider Halo 3 tips and strategies, place your name and email address in the form below." Then I will have their information and send them the free tips. Since I am giving them good information that provides value, the visitor now knows that the information that I am charging people to receive must be good. So if your in network marketing and your target market is people who want to make money from home. You should think of something that you could give away that would be valuable to them. My mentor actually gave me a free cd that revealed the same methods the top earners were using to make money online. Once I listened to this cd that revealed exactly what I needed to do to be a successful online marketer, I was willing to listen to anything he told me. After months of searching online for the perfect opportunity, I found out that it had nothing to do with the opportunity but with the methods I was using. So find something of value that you can give away to bring more traffic to your site.

3. Join forums and post quality content. People join forums to discuss topics with like minded people. Gamers join Video Game Forums. Online marketers should join marketing forums. This is a good way to stay on top of your industry. Forums are a great place to learn what to do and what not to do. You should already have your product and target market established so finding relevant forums should be no problem for you. Join a few of those forums and introduce yourself and begin to establish your identity. You can do this by answering questions and posting interesting topics. You do not want to be new to internet marketing and attempting to answer questions that you do not know the answer to. This will not only make you look dumb but no one will want to check out what ever you recommend. I started off by joining a few gaming forums and simply answering any questions I saw. If I didn't know the answer, I went and found the answer and tried to reply before anyone else. When someone can see that you care about solving their problem or answering their question, this builds trust. Trust in you and your brand. This whole process of article writing and joining forums is to brand yourself and your company or product. You want to be branded as a leader or someone who knows what they are talking about. The key to driving traffic back to your site is in your forum signature. Simply make your signature as a link back to your website and voila, targeted traffic.

4. Find a mentor. First, what is a mentor? A mentor is defined as an influential senior sponsor or supporter. So you should find someone who is successful in whatever it is you are trying to do. If your goal is to be a successful internet marketer, you should be looking for a successful internet marketer. Once you find this person who is proven in your field you need to try to get all of the information that you can from them. When I initially decided that I wanted to start an online business it took me a while to find a mentor that I could relate to. Once I found a mentor that suited me I was able to schedule a free 1 hour phone consultation with him. During this hour I wrote down every nugget of valuable information that I could. At the end of the call he offered me a chance for a week long coaching session to get my business going even quicker. Unfortunately, I could not afford the price that he was asking but the phone consultation was more than enough to get me going in the right direction. Once I made enough money, I immediately called him up for that week long coaching session. A mentor can save you a lot of time and put you ahead of the learning curve which will get you towards your goals much quicker. Don't just look for someone who you think is making loads of money. Find someone that you know in your heart is genuine and is actually trying to help others.

5. Stay focused and committed to whatever you are doing. 95 percent of home based business owners are failing when it comes to generating income online. Every day people are deciding to use the internet as a tool to generate income from home. The problem is they don't realize that time and effort are involved. All of the people who are successful now started off just like you and I. They started an online business as a way to change their lives and take control. Chances are they did not just put up a website and make tons of money overnight. People are enticed and lured by the chance of "getting rich" on "auto-pilot". Auto pilot does not come until you have established your presence online and have a system for driving traffic to your website. Everyone wants to make money in their pajamas, who doesn't want to earn money while they sleep? We all want the best for ourselves and our families and it is going to require some work. This is the main reason people fail in this line of work. They give up before they have given themselves a chance to succeed. They don't perform the daily activities that it takes to be successful. They want a business to run on auto pilot from day one. You have to check the plane, then take off with the plane before you can hit the auto pilot switch. Imagine if pilots jumped right in the cockpit and expected the plane to get you to where you needed to go. Research whatever opportunity you decide to go with first. Once you are 100 percent behind your company or product you need to stick to it. Just because you don't make any money within two months from a network marketing company does not make it a scam. This does not make it a pyramid scheme. There are others who came in and made money within one month. What makes them different from you? The fact that they took daily action. There are habits that successful people have and once you learn them and apply them to your life, you will be successful as well. Colonel Sanders was turned down over 100 times when he was trying to sell his chicken recipe. Thomas Edison was told that he was crazy when he kept failing at trying to make the light bulb. Keep that in mind when you feel like giving up at your online business. If you put in the work early, your results will be like a snowball effect.
